Keep in touch with the latest trends in the real-time embedded technologies!

Embedded World 2008 Exhibition & Conference took place from 26-28 February, 2008, in Nürnberg, Germany.

Nürnberg, a 13th century medieval town, was almost completely destroyed by bombings during World War II. One would never know it since it was rebuilt in the same architectural style and enjoys several assets: a lovely historical downtown where one can enjoy strolling between shops and "old" buildings, several quaint churches, excellent restaurants and bars in the downtown area offering a wide variety of cuisines next to the traditional Bratwursthäusle (not recommended for vegetarians!)

The entrance of the Exhibition
Nürnberg is also the place of big thematic exhibitions, which liven up the town, of which Embedded World is the most important.

It is easy to get a good idea of the following markets:

  • Hardware Components or Modules,
  • Test tools or hardware design,
  • Software Development Tools,
  • Target Platforms for different applications.

This year again, Embedded World was organized by Nürnberg Messe with the assistance of WEKA Fachzeitschriften-Verlag for the conferences and Micro Consult for the forum.

The predominance of software solutions representatives was obvious, probably owing to Electronica Trade Fair absence at the end of the year 2007.

As a result, a second hall was opened to present complete software solutions of the market.

On Freescale booth, one of the two biggest of the Exhibition, demonstration of an acceleration sensor : it allows intuitive and remote piloting of a robot.

Organisators can be proud of the new record in 2008: number of trade visitors and exhibitors would be 15% up on last year's.

The relevant results noted by EmbeddedTouch are the following:

  • EmbeddedWorld is essentially a material solutions and hardware Exhibition,
  • Number of foreign exhibitors flopped of 15%,
  • Visitors are mostly German,
  • Automotive references are everywhere ; it can be anyway the only one (some references to Telecom, to Consumer Electronic, a few references to Aeronautic or to Defence, and hardly to Space or to Railway).

In this context, AUTOSAR reference is everywhere.

Regarding tools and software solutions, rare were they who did not talk about this.
It's true that the first Autosar normalized product was launched last autumn (by BMW).

EmbeddedTouch also noticed that software editors show compatibilities with related tools or partnerships with other actors in the field, editors or solicitors of services (Aïcas/Sysgo, Aonix/Green Hills, Artisan Software/The MathWorks, Esterel/WindRiverSystems, Geensys/MB Technologies, …); this might announce new companies merging in the market, such as ILogix/Teleogic or Polyspace/The Mathworks.

On the occasion of the 2008 Edition, the Embedded Awards were distributed to the following companies:

Here are informations and notes recorded during our visit:

  • Aicas: announces a new release of JamaicaVM Version 3.2 with "thread monitoring", compliance with ARINC 653 and a JamaicaVM for CoDeSys,

  • Aonix: besides its participation to the DIANA European Project (aeronautic/Java), Aonix announces the selection of the Next-Generation Traffic Control system from Signalbau Huber GmbH, and also its partnership with Green Hills to offer the embedded market the VM PERC availability on the INTEGRITY RTOS,

  • All4Tech: emphasizes "Services way of thinking", and announces interface to Doors in the next MaTeLo version in order to follow the effective treatment of requirements in test phase,
  • Artisan Software: previews Version 7.0 of its famous product Artisan Studio,
  • dSpace: deals with AUTOSAR as last year; each demonstration hotspot talk about AUTOSAR,
  • eCosCentric: is developing its services offer,
  • Esterel: focuses its communication on SCADE V6 which is certified DO178B Level A (Aeronautics & Defense), EN 50128 (rail transportation) and IEC 61508 (Automotive, …)
  • Etas: reminds its commitment in AUTOSAR and presents its panel of offers about service as well as products,
  • Geensys: announces its partnership with MB Technologies for the French automotive market and launches its first AUTOSAR Development Kit (around AUTOSAR Builder) with 2 demonstrators, CAN and NVRAM,
  • Microsoft: nothing new on products XP Embedded SP2 and Embedded CE 6.0 until the end of 2006, but this year, Microsoft presents its integrators solutions such as Adeneo and of course Silica,
  • Montavista: officialises Hitex such as its new German distributor. As a result, Montavista was present on Hitex stand, but not really visible,
  • QNX: enhances its offer to the service with the presentation of its offer middleware "QNX Aviage" clearly dedicated to the multimedia,

  • Sysgo: announces and visualizes by a scale model on the booth, that Terex O&K has selected PikeOS for its excavators product line and more discreetly that Thalès solution about German health insurance card, based on ElinOS, was certified,

  • Telelogic: after its purchase by IBM, Telelogic seems to be determined to include all jobs, and climbs thanks to its new definition: "Telelogic, Requirements – Driven Innovation",

  • The MathWorks: after Polyspace integration, The Mathworks seems to carry on Polyspace tools development in Grenoble location (35 employees),
  • Vector: besides AUTOSAR, Vector presents its solutions regarding MOST, FlexRay and LIN,
  • WindRiverSystems: promotes its range (VxWorks, Workbench and Linux platform) but through a services offer; the fourth presentation point is a video application for the aeronautic, compliant to DO 178B, DO 254 and ARINC 653 standards.

Organizer’s information are available on its website too.

Next edition of EmbeddedWorld will take place March 3-5th 2009…in Nürnberg!

Because information on these technologies is varied, in constant development, often dispersed or unpublished,

Because you would waste time reading it all, analyzing it all, filing it all to do it all over the following month,
